The Hermitage Antiquity Collection, founded in the 19th century, contains an important and interesting collection of Greek vases. The initial nucleus of the collection was formed by a large collection purchased for the Museum and articles found during excavations of Greek settlements on the Black Sea North coast.
Amongst the articles are unique 4th-century B.C. Kerch-style painted vases, a remarkable pelike featuring a swallow and a psykter showing feasting hetaerae and bearing the signature of Euphronios.
The collection also includes interesting pieces of black- and red-figured pottery including a kantharos with faces of two women, the Dog's Head Rhyton, and the Girl's Head, which is signed by the master Charinos.
Lyubov Utkina is the senior researcher of the Antiquity Department, she has been a curator of the Hermitage collection of Greek vases since 1979. She is also involved in preparing articles for exhibitions in Russia and abroad. |
