The Collection of Russian Furniture |
| by Natalia Guseva - Curator of Russian furniture |
The Hermitage collection of Russian furniture has over 3,000 items, making it the largest in the world.
This collection makes it possible to trace the overall history of Russian furniture making. A vast array of shapes and decorative elements shows the evolution of style, as well as enhancements to furniture decorating techniques.
All items are remarkable; however, the pieces of furniture that witnessed the life of the Russian Emperors are of special interest.
Some replicas of these articles are included in our furniture offerings: a corner cupboard from the epoch of Catherine the Great, an armchair from her Chinese study and a bureau created at the Gambs workshops.
Natalia Guseva has worked at the Hermitage since 1981. Ms. Guseva's studies are devoted to Russian applied art and artistic furniture making. She was involved in the development of several replicas for the Baker's "Russian Collection". |
